Blue Belt Grading Requirements
Class Content
This is a guide to the difference between the classes. It is important that there is a noticable difference between classes.

BJJ
Training is conducted both With Gi and Without Gi depending on Season
Instruction is provided in technical Jiu Jitsu and Submission Techniques
Some medium intensity conditioning
Skill and coordination drills
Sparring will consist of specific themes and free training at varied intensities
Competition preparation may include specific training for BJJ
No Striking training at all

MMA
Training is conducted in fight shorts and Rash Vest - Protective equipment is compulsory
Some medium to high level intensity conditioning
Technical instruction should be limited only to techniques unique to MMA
Instruction on Tactics and Integration of techniques for MMA with plenty of reference to UFC, Pride, Affliction etc...
Sparring will include limited sparring in MMA and controlled free sparring.


Kickboxing for MMA
Training is conducted in fight shorts and Rash Vest - Protective equipment is compulsory Technical Instruction and Coaching on striking and takedowns for MMA
Striking skills training at medium to high intensity
Sparring will include Standup, takedowns and ground and pound in limited scope and controlled freestyle.

Current Theme Intermediate Class
Intermediate Guard

JJL in Ringwood is currently working on Intermediate Guard Work.

The goal of this theme is to educate our athletes in guard themes above basic level.

Basic Guard includes Closed Guard and Open Guard.

Development of the guard beyond closed and open guard involves learning about the intermediate concepts including,
  • Sitting Guard
  • Butterfly Guard
  • Spider Guard
  • Half Guard
  • Inside Out Guard

Ideally athletes around Blue Belt Level become familiar with each aspect of intermediate guard.

Moving to each position
Controlling each position
Two Sweeps or attacks from each position
Purple Belt Grading Requirements

Basic Guard

The goal of this theme is to educate our athletes in guard themes

Basic Guard includes Closed Guard and Open Guard.

Development of the basic guard involves closed guard and open guard in the areas
  • basic sweeps and reversals off closed guard
  • basic attacks off closed and open guard
  • defenses to basic guard passing
  • skill and coordination development
